Abdul Malik Kweku Baako Jnr, a veteran journalist, has declined a nomination to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Professional Studies in Accra (UPSA).
According to a letter dated Monday, May 10, 2021, the university wishes to honor Mr. Baako for his training and support for public interest journalism in Ghana.
Prof. Abednego F.O Martey, the Vice-Chancellor, praised Ghana’s press freedom from the military regime to the present.
A section of the letter stated, “The UPSA Management has nominated you for the award of an honorary Doctorate Degree.”
However, in a statement on Newsfile on Saturday, Mr. Baako declined the honor, stating that he has previously declined several other honorary degrees.
This came after the show’s host, Samson Lardy Anyenini, congratulated him on his most recent UPSA nomination.
“I am aware of other universities that have attempted to do this for Kweku Baako, but he has resisted, so let’s see what happens this time when the UPSA says it will confer the degree on him,” the host said.
However, the New Crusading Guide’s Editor-in-Chief responded in the negative, saying, “Same tale will happen.”
Meanwhile, President Nana Akufo-Addo will get an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
On Saturday, May 29, 2021, the President will receive a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership (Honoris Causa) degree.
